Information

Blood Samples

Why do we need blood samples?

We are requesting blood samples to determine the gene(s) and the mutation responsible for PRA in the Irish Wolfhound.
These type of investigations usually take a very long time (sometimes years!) but they are essential for the development of a DNA-based test to determine carriers and to fine-tune your breeding program.

How much blood do we need and in what type of tube?

We are requesting blood samples from normal and affected dogs to extract DNA. Five - 10 ml of EDTA blood (purple top tube) should be sufficient.

What information do you need to send?

Please include basic pedigree information (both registered and call (pet) names, gender, parents, and date of birth), certificate of eye exam from a veterinary ophthalmologist and available health records.

How do you need to send the blood?

The blood may be sent on ice packs or at room temperature, but NOT frozen.

Where to send all of the above?
